    PRE-CLINICAL PHASE - (1.6 years) This phase is presented through live, interactive, instructor-led, classrooms includes:

    • General Principles Course
    • 9 Organ Systems
    • Pre-Clinical Exam (PCE)
    • *Approved Research Proposal*

    *Students must have their research prospectus approved by the Director of Research and presented at the Research Club before they may begin the Transition Phase.*

    TRANSITION PHASE - (6 Months)This phase is intended to prepare students for a successful transition to clinical rotations and includes:

    • Clinical Dentistry Transition Units
    • Clinical Dentistry Skills Course (CDSC)


    CLINICAL PHASE - (2 Years)

    • This phase includes:
    • Clinical Core Rotations (48 weeks)
    • Elective Rotations (24 weeks)
    • Objective Structured Clinical Dentistry Examination (OSCDE)
    • Final Clinical Dentistry Exam (FCDE
    • Research Methodology and Published Research Project. 

    CURRICULUM 

    FIRST AND SECOND YEARS

    Biological science classes, begin clinical education through simulation. In the first two years of dental school, students spend most of their time studying basic biological sciences and learning the structure and function of the body and the diseases that can affect it.

    Classes often include:

    Gross Anatomy, Human Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Dental-oriented sciences, Oral anatomy, Oral pathology, Oral histology, Microbial Physiology & Immunology, Molecular & Cell Biology, Embryology & Oral Tissues, Body Tissues, Dental Anatomy & Morphology, 

    Students also often learn about how to care for a diverse array of populations and may interact with patients to provide very basic oral health care. Most of their training outside of the core classes in the first two years involves practicing procedures on models of the mouth and teeth.

    THIRD AND FOURTH YEARS: 

    Mostly Clinical Dentistry

    The last two years of dental school mostly involve clinical study (direct patient care) and some practice management instruction. Students will learn to care for chronically ill, disabled, special care and geriatric patients as well as children to ensure they have a wide variety of experience caring for all types of people.

    Classes often include Core and Elective rotations in: 

    Anesthesiology, Emergency Dental Medicine, Surgery, Ethics and Behavioral Dentistry, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Clinical Dentistry, Dental Public Health, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Clinical Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry.

    COOK COLLEGE OF DENTISTS (CD - CK)

    The Division Of Postgraduate Dental Education (PGDE)

    The Postgraduate Dental Education programme at the School of Dental Medicine James Cook Medical University include an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program as well as postgraduate study options in nine dental specialties that leads to a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent), Magister Chirurgiae (MCh) or Master / Magister of Surgery / Chirurgiae degrees in any specified Dental Specialty and a Specialist certificate, for specialized Dental practice. Specialties ranging from endodontics, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, dual periodontics prosthodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics e.t.c.

    In all of the programmes, students are presented with a broad range of clinical procedures rather than any single method of treatment, preparing graduates to manage a diversity of cases and use varying treatment modalities.
