    James Cook Medical University has a standing relationship with many excellent hospitals and clinical centers. 

    A clinical center is defined as a hospital, or group of hospitals, able to provide at least four of five core rotations and train 5 to 40 students / residents & fellows at all times. Clinical centers provides fellowships, residencies, sub-internships, primary care rotations and electives.

    With JCMU clinical directors, clerkship directors and faculty at each location, our students, can receive their clinical education in their own “university” clinical program.

    During the residency, our students are covered by the JCMU Malpractice Liability Insurance. Clinical Clerkship weeks constitute third and fourth year medical education to complete a Doctor of Medicine degree.

    Although the majority of all JCMU students complete their clinical rotations / residency / fellowship in the United States, rotations outside the United States are also available. Students may participate in rotations in Canada, Great Britain, Ireland,  and in many worldwide locations.

    Potential Residents and Fellows aspiring to do their Specialist training in Malta and New Zealand must meet with the minimum licensure requirements at the medical / dental councils, before the actual application itself to JCMU residency and fellowship training programmes.

    Potential Residents and Fellows aspiring to do their Specialist training outside of Malta and New Zealand shall be referred to as International Residents / Fellows, and are mandated to meet the minimum requirements of the country where they intend to carryout their training. (Applicants must pick from countries listed below).

    Once International Applicants picks any of JCMU'S approved country after meeting the minimum requirements and obtaining a license from that country, we shall post such applicant to any of our approved hospitals in the hospital directory of the country that the applicant has chosen.

    All residents / Fellows /Students  carrying out their training in New Zealand, Malta & Australia are NOT considered as International. 

    Approved location / countries of training includes; 

    • Malta 
    • New Zealand and all it's Territories 
    • United States 
    • United Kingdom 
    • Australia
    • Canada  

      International Residents can apply to us for the approval of their Country and hospital of training prior to their application for residency. For the application to be successful:

      • Doctor MUST notify us of the Country of Training.
      • The proposed hospital of training MUST meet requirement. Hospital should be at least 400 bedded, ICU 50 bedded, alternatively applicant can have numerous rotations across different hospitals according to their specialty strength, but MUST be approved by us.
      • The International Resident / Fellow has obtained a license to practice medicine / dentistry from that country authority 
      • International Resident / Fellow has submitted proof of residency of living In that country
      •  International Resident doesn't have any criminal record in that country 
      • Hospital and International Resident has authorized our Residency and Fellowship supervisors to visit, stay and supervise the training
      • International Resident / Fellow has met the minimum Admission requirements to enter Specialist Residency / Fellowship Training. 
      • International Resident / Fellow is above 18 of age.
